There can be no pretence singing with a piano. When the accompanist is as skilled as Gisela Meyer certainly the singer needs to be alert! I wanted to record two albums with piano for a number of years. But to find the right pianist to work with is not easy.

Many years ago I produced a little concert in Queen's Park, London. A gathering of friends for a good cause. It was a successful evening. Much of that productivity was due to Gisela as the musical director. So when I was trying to decide who to ask to play on these albums it was a 'fait accompli' in my mind.

Typical of me I never choose those songs that are considered 'easy' to sing. But I think that is exactly the point. To push beyond the accepted boundaries is vital for artistic growth. As per usual I like challenging characters to play, such is my background in the theatre. There can be no doubt that attempting Otello or the depths of Florestan is not for the faint-of-heart. But I see them as flawed Heroes. It is their damaged psychology that attracts me.

Again it is important that the music, the songs, the human-beings and the mixing/mastering of this album are raw, edgy, imperfect. This duality of being Human is very important. Too often we are exposed to the shining fakery of perfection. This is wrong! The artist should be free and expressive and broken.

I would like to thank sincerely Gisela Meyer for her emotional playing and helping produce such heartfelt music and James Olley for his excellent cover art.

Sincere Thanks to You, the Listener, I am very grateful to you, wherever you may be and I hope these songs, this music, takes you away from any troubles...
