about

This final album of contemporary musical theatre has been many years in the back of my mind. I attended drama school in London, Mountview, in the nineties and it was a formative, challenging experience. Friends were made and lost, tears were shed, lovers present then gone. But the one constant was the work. Even though I studied on the Acting course we were often asked to sing and even then I was drawn to those characters that were difficult human-beings. They expressed themselves in song with such intensity that as an actor you simply had to rise up to meet them.

During the recording of albums over the past number of years whether that be of my own songwriting or classical aria or musical theatre, I have discovered that it is important that I reach down into the abyss of myself. There is some kind of heart, some kind of energy down there that as a creative we seem to have access to. It is not easy. It can be frustrating, it can be dangerous, it can be thrilling.

We should all strive to care for our craft, to sculpt our work as actors, singers, artists. Many times I have been told 'You take it so seriously...' but I have to take it seriously. That is my nature. I am not exceptional by any means but I do sincerely care and craft my work, each song, each character until that abyss from within me is revealed.

The pain of Jean ValJean, the fear and concern of Judas, the warped psychology of Jack Skellington. But these are exposés of life and magick. The theatre is a sacred space. It should be. This invisible spirit lives there and we should respect that.

None of these recordings are perfect. Life is not perfect. These are an exploration of rage and love and the human spirit. Each song is not necessarily performed as expected or normal. Each song is taken almost as if from a live recording. What if you were sitting in a theatre listening to Gisela and I working together? There is something of a wild edge to each. Exactly as they should be.

Sincere Thanks to the musical aptitude and ingenuity of Gisela Meyer and the brilliant album artwork of James Olley.

Sincere Thanks to You, the Listener, I am very grateful to you, wherever you may be and I hope these songs, this music, takes you away from any troubles...
